What Is RCSearch?

RCSearch is the super-easy-to-use search engine for UserLand's Radio Community Servertm.

It's also a "Just-in-time" search engine. Within minutes of uploading a new page to your community server, that page is fully indexed and searchable.

RCSearch is fast, too. Most searches display their results almost instantly.

While RCSearch is a new piece of software, it's built with two tools that Macrobyte has been developing and using for years: AttSearchEngine and Queue. Both of these tools have had many thousands of hours of burn in. That doesn't mean they're guaranteed to be bugless, but it does mean they work, and that they work consistently.

You should expect the same consistency from RCSearch. However...

RCSearch is beta software! It's not finished yet. It is fully functional, but more features are planned. For now, the basics are in and working.

Features

  • index new and changed pages when they're uploaded
  • remove pages from the index when they're deleted
  • manually reindex some or all of the pages with a single command
  • search results include context with search terms in bold
  • formatting of items in search results is controlled with a template
  • restrict searches to content from specific users

Many more features are planned, but first we want to make sure that the community which has built up around Radio UserLandtm wants a solid, reliable, search engine written in the same environment.

And, that they're willing to pay for it.

What Isn't It?

RCSearch isn't a web crawler or spider. It isn't even a general-purpose search engine for a web site that's not hosted by RCS. Nor is it a food processor, although we're willing to consult on that last point if your cooking is good enough.
